The Ruggeri winery was established in 1950 by Giustino Bisol, whose family boasts a deeply rooted, centuries-old tradition in viticulture in the Valdobbiadene area. The placename “Case Bisoi” (that is “the Houses of the Bisols”) is to be found on the oldest maps of the area, in the heart of the zone now known as Cartizze and once called “Chartice” or “Gardizze”. It is here, according to property/tax assessment documents in the public archives, that the Bisol family has been cultivating vines since many centuries.

In the 1800s Eliseo Bisol left further documentary evidence of his activity as a distiller. Around 1920, his son Luigi Bisol, an oenologist, built a winery in Montebelluna. In 1950, Luigi’s son Giustino Bisol established the Ruggeri winery in Santo Stefano di Valdobbiadene to produce and promote the sparkling Prosecco Superiore and Cartizze wines.

Today the winery is run by Paolo Bisol, who is assisted by his children Giustino and Isabella.

The Ruggeri winery, which was established in 1950 by Giustino Bisol, was originally housed in small premises in the village of Santo Stefano di Valdobbiadene. After a temporary move to a larger site in the centre of the village, in the early Nineties it was relocated to new, larger and more rational premises which can receive and process almost 3,000 tons of grapes which are brought there every harvest.

The Prosecco Superiore DOCG grapes are usually delivered by over a hundred vine-growers. Nearly all of them have their vineyards in the municipality of Valdobbiadene, while 25 also grow Cartizze grapes. It should be noted that many of the superior vineyards lie in the historic districts of S.Pietro di Barbozza. Santo Stefano and Saccol, which have always been renowned for producing the best in terms of quality. Ruggeri owns a small vineyard of Cartizze and 20 hectares on the nearby Montello, 12 of them are cultivated with Pinot Grigio and Glera (traditionally called Prosecco). About 1 hectare is dedicated to the growing of Recantina, an ancient and authochtonous red grape variety which was recovered thanks to the hard work of cooperation with the Istituto Sperimentale Per la Viticoltura di Conegliano (School of Viticulture of Conegliano).

The Ruggeri winery is well equipped to cope with the considerable harvest; it has two fully independent lines for receiving the grapes and 5 ‘soft’ presses, thereby ensuring separation of the various vineyard harvests also at the busiest times.

For about 20 years, annual production has been around the one million bottle mark, 60% of which is distributed in Italy and the rest to 35 countries worldwide.

The Glera grape cluster, elongated and lightly packed with long thin stalks sustaining the lightly sun-kissed grapes, is itself as delicate and elegant as the wine it produces.

It is harvested in the second part of September, together with small quantities of the Verdiso and Perera grape which are equally represented in the vineyard and important for their acidity and aroma respectively.

With the coming of the new disciplinary regulations the grape variety Prosecco is named

Glera and the word Prosecco is used to indicate the wide territory of the new Denomination of Origin that stretches from Friuli to most of the Veneto region, comprising nine provinces of Trieste, Gorizia, Pordenone, Udine, Treviso, Belluno, Venice, Padua, Vicenza. This huge area boasts 20,000 hectares of vineyards for the production of Prosecco Doc.

Inside the wide territory of Prosecco DOC (Controlled Denomination of Origin) the historical and small area of Valdobbiadene DOCG(Controlled and Guaranteed Denomination of Origin) stands out for its excellent quality grapes and its wine is named VALDOBBIADENE PROSECCO SUPERIORE.

The Valdobbiadene grape is grown in the northern part of the Marca Trevigiana in a zone extending from Colle Umberto to Valdobbiadene, the ancient zone of Valduplavensis, “...where the vine blossoms eternally...” (St.Venantius Fortunatus 535-603 AD).

Valdobbiadene is indisputably the most interesting vine-growing area in terms of quality and

indeed its vineyards have always produced the most prestigious and fragrant Prosecco Superiore. The presence of many old and sometimes very old vines contributes to raising the quality of the Valdobbiadene vineyards. Thanks to its considerable root system, an old Prosecco vine, which may be defined as “the memory of the region”, successfully copes with the varied climate so typical of the Valdobbiadene hills, thereby ensuring constantly high quality year by year.

“Vitis etiam provectioris aetatis facit uvas meliores et melius vinum, sed facit uvas pauciores proportione suae quantitatis quam juvenis”.

Alberto Magno (1193-1280)

Cartizze is the name of a small highly quoted area covering just 106 hectares, located in the heart of the Valdobbiadene region.

Cartizze, or to be more precise Valdobbiadene Superiore di Cartizze, represents the highest oenological expression of the area. This wine epitomizes the finesse, elegance and delicate fruit and floral aromas of the grapes grown in the exclusive and extremely limited Cartizze area. The fortunate exposure of the hills and the particular soil composition (consisting mostly of limestone, clay and sandstone) give origin to this highly characteristic and therefore greatly sought after wine.

Cartizze traditionally has a delicate vein of sweetness. At one time the grapes were harvested as late as possible (the end of October or even early November) so that the chilly night temperatures would halt the fermentation process, which began again spontaneously the following spring when the first warmth brought the yeasts back to life. This fermentation technique had the rare attribute of being very slow, thus offering the possibility to enjoy, for a few months, extremely pleasant, sparkling and subtle wines with a marvellous bouquet and a sweet, fruity taste.
