The Beginnings

Pioneers in organic winemaking

Albet i Noya, pioneers in organically farmed wines since 1978. Nobody told us that it would be easy, in fact, many believed it was impossible, but with desire, with consistency, audacity, with a touch of madness, with creativity and with respect for everything that surrounds us we got where we are today. And we’re not stopping.

The adventure continues...

Story of our adventure

5 generations of farmers

In 1903, during the phylloxera crisis, our great great grandfather, Joan Albet i Rovirosa, arrived in the Penedès to work the the vineyards at the Can Vendrell de la Codina estate, in Sant Pau d'Ordal. And here he stayed. For five generations, the Albet family, tenant farmers of Can Vendrell, have farmed, loved and watched over the vines that are now the protagonists of our wines.

But that wasn’t enough, and in the late seventies an opportunity knocked on our door and, restless as ever, we decided to embrace it. A Danish company was searching the Penedes for an organic wine grower. Nobody had ever heard of organic wines. But curiosity won us over and that's how we threw ourselves into this adventure.

The Cellar

Welcome to our home

Just outside Sant Pau d'Ordal, on the Can Vendrell de la Codina estate, is our modernist winery designed by Josep Maria Pericas in 1925. In recent years, at Albet i Noya, we have expanded and modernized the facilities with the Xapallà cellar, built in 2004, where we age the red wines and have the bottling plant. Next door, the Era cellar is equipped with the most cutting-edge and respectful technology, where we make, exclusively and separately, the top wines in the Albet i Noya range. We have also acquired new vineyards like the Can Milà Estate, in Lavern, or Can Simó in the Mediona area.

La Casa Gran

The main house, dating from 1872, houses the reception, the shop and the meeting point for all our visitors. We have a majestic hall with capacity for up to 50 people and a garden with spectacular views to hold tastings, lunches and events of all kinds. Next door is the old tenant's farmhouse, which dates back to the year 1400, and now houses our offices. Our goal is that you always feel at home here, because you, when you are here, are also part of our adventure.

The wine staircase

For art lovers, this is a must see. The wine staircase is a great work by artist Joan Raven (Vilafranca, 1963) that presides over all four floors of the main house’s staircase. It is a faithful representation, with some dreamlike touches, of the vegetative cycle of the vineyard and of the whole winemaking process. From the land and the origin to enjoyment and the final release.

The Vine

From the moment we get up until we go to sleep, in the Penedès we live for the vines. We walk through vineyards, we work surrounded by vines. We fall in love with views of the vineyards and, when we are sad, we console ourselves and recover amongst the vines. Because to walk through our vineyards is to breathe in nature, biodiversity, culture, history. Our vines are our treasure. And we have taken care of them and loved them for you. Because only with the best vines we will be able to make the best wines.

Organic farming

The basis of organic farming is observing and listening to the vineyard. We work with a plant cover to oxygenate the soil in the most natural way possible. And we use green and organic fertilizers, using the remains of the vine and animal manures suitable for organic farming. We completely avoid the use of insecticides with sexual confusion techniques or through the balance of biodiversity on our land by reintroducing, for example, bat colonies. We always look for the varieties that adapt best to our environment and, for some years have been immersed in a complex R & D project in the search for varieties resistant to pests that should allow us, in the near future, to completely eliminate the use of copper and reduce applications of sulfur in the vineyard by 90%. All our production (both our own vineyards and those of our suppliers) is certified by the CCPAE and is strictly controlled by our vineyard team.

Our Vineyards

Most of our vineyards are located in the mountains of Ordal, arranged on terraces, slopes or in small plots that we can work in a personalized way depending on the orientation, the hours of sunshine, the humidity and the altitude. Like all good vineyard soils, those of Can Vendrell are poor in organic matter, with variable contents of clay and sand on a limestone bed, a permeable soil but with a good moisture retention capacity.

We love to experiment, mix it up, try new things ... Over the years, we have planted and introduced more than 20 different grape varieties, working with the local varieties of the Penedès but also looking for the best adaptation and the excellence of international varieties that have given us great joys over the years. Among the whites, we have Xarel·lo, Macabeu, Parellada, Moscatel, Chardonnay, Viognier, Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling, Garnatxa Blanca and four experimental varieties. The reds are Ull de llebre, Garnatxa, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah, Pinot Noir, Caladoc, Marselan, Arinarinoa and six experimental varieties.
