AGUT RESTAURANT RECOMMENDED

The food never disappoints, and you dine surrounded by artworks by great Catalan painters of the 20th century. You might disagree with our choice for Agut as the best restaurant in Barcelona, but you can't beat consistency in quality and flavour that's stood the test of time for over a century. If you want to experience true Catalan cuisine, this is it.

Barcelona has a wealth of eateries that have improved over the years. Many are back on the map after having been forgotten, and some have the added bonus of having modernized without going over the top, to catch up with the demand for good quality products that their clients want. One such case is Agut on C/Gignàs, one of the first good restaurants I found when I came to Barcelona in the ’70s. It’s where I was introduced to alioli and since then I’ve been greatly impressed and sometimes disappointed. I was chuffed recently when I ordered the alioli in Agut found it to be just as good as the day I first tasted it. This example (and please forgive the excessively personal experience of it) is proof that there are restaurants who work to put quality before marketing and sales. And you can really tell the difference in a place that puts that kind of care and attention into what they do.

Carme Ruscalleda, who shares two Michelin stars with her son Raül Balam at the restaurant Moments is the head of Blanc restaurant at the Mandarin Hotel. She chose to build a menu of simple and fresh recipes based on the seasonality of products in the area. Ruscalleda specializes in Catalan cuisine and the menu at Blanc is nothing but the best dishes from the region. From Barcelona, the cannelloni with chicken, pork and beef is a must and the Mediterranean inspired salad has the freshest burrata (buffalo milk cheese), tomato, basil and romesco (red pepper sauce).

Ruscalleda has created a menu of simple and fresh recipes based on the excellence of raw materials and seasonality. The mains have a strong Catalan footprint in recipes such as Barcelona-style cannelloni and a wholly Mediterranean salad with fresh burrata, tomato, basil and romesco. You'll also find tapas, many with an Asian touch, and all of which you can order from the hotel's Banker's Bar and Mimosa terrace as well, because Ruscalleda manages all of the Mandarin's gastro offerings.

Can Bosch restaurant started out as a humble fisherman’s bar opened in 1969 by Juan Bautista Bosch and Lourdes Font, right around the corner from the port of Cambrils. The bar started to serve food, and in 1980 it opened as a restaurant. Since then, it has managed to become a gastronomic point of reference; its Michelin star, obtained in 1984, is one example of the recognition it has received.

Since 1982, Juan Bosch in the kitchen and Montserrat Costa in the dining room have maintained this level of excellence, combining a respect for the simple traditional seafood of its origins with the new culinary trends that have become popular in recent decades.

In 2012, the restaurant has incorporated the third generation of this family, represented by Arnau Bosch and Eva Perelló. This gives continuity to a project that is deeply rooted in its place of origin, but which doesn’t rest on its laurels, but rather constantly seeks to outdo itself.

Chef Paco Pérez has earned two Michelin stars for his Enoteca, a heavyweight in Barcelona in its own right. Pérez also saw his Miramar restaurant in the Catalan city of Llançà get its second Michelin star. Few chefs can translate the flavour of the sea into haute cuisine the way he does, and his craft speaks to the imagination.

The heights Enoteca's 'espardenyes' (Mediterranean sea cucumbers) have hit make them deserving of their own chapter in Catalan avant-garde cuisine, and the rice dishes will satisfy the biggest food snobs and Catalan cooking fundamentalists alike. Surrendering to the restaurant's fragrant rice with lobster is the best way to pay tribute.

The highly-esteemed chef has created an enticing menu which translates the flavours of the sea into haute cuisine and his imaginative approach to local and traditional ingredients. The heart and soul of Mediterranean cooking is rendered in elegant dishes that follow a philosophy of high-quality raw ingredients, simplicity and elegance.

Enoteca has been a reference in the gastronomy map of the city since its opening in 2008, bringing clients and the local public the opportunity to taste an exquisite menu adapted each season of the year in one of the best wine cellars on the sea shore. The restaurant is located in the five-star Hotel Arts, a benchmark for luxury hotels in Barcelona.

The gourmet area of Cervesa Moritz, in what used to be the old factory, is a non-stop food and drink extravaganza. In the brewery area, which has the longest bar in the city, you can try unpasteurised beer from a beer tap connected directly to a barrel in a microbrewery. You can also choose from a long menu of tapas from around the world, devised by by Jordi Vilà, which fuses the cuisines of Alsace and Spain. There is also a wine bar, and a French-style brasserie will soon be opening, as well as a gourmet restaurant. In this building, which was completely renovated by Jean Nouvel, you can also visit the microbrewery, but the best thing is to just take a stroll around and discover the little architectural details – the plant-lined walls, the periscope windows – that make the Fàbrica Moritz one of the city’s most amazing public buildings.

Rafa Penya has become an undisputed leader in the world of gastronomy, a daring chef with enormous creativity, yet his dishes are still consistently recognisable and delectable. Take the octopus with 'butifarra negra' (black sausage), for example. Or the ginger squab. Or the mouth-watering omelette made with herbs and wrapped with a paper-thin slice of Catalan bacon. No longer is Gresca a small restaurant with minimal equipment, and since it's grown in size as well, you can now eat at the bar, with a view of the kitchen, and enjoy the show that features a strong foundation and a French spirit.

Niño Viejo:Mon, Tue closed;Wed 7pm-11.30pm; Thu

Sat 1pm-3.30pm, 7.30pm-11.30pm; Sun 1pm-3.30pm

Hoja Santa, plainly and simply put, is one of the best Mexican restaurants in Barcelona. Albert Adrià and Mexican chef Paco Méndez approach popular Mexican tradition with an outlook and products that are both haute cuisine, and from there they manage to get surprising dishes such as the cep mushroom and truffle quesadilla, and the wagyu veal with chichilo mole. Where they really shine is in the gourmet work with vegetables, with dishes that play with the classics – try the pasilla mole with crunchy baby veg.

Attached next door is Albert Adrià's taco bar, Niño Viejo, which is pure fun: scrumptious tacos include the 'huitlacoche' (the corn smut fungus is a delicacy), as well as pork 'carnitas', ribs and scratchings. But in addition to traditional Mexican dishes, the cooking's also got the Adrià touch: the chicken with annatto marinade barbecued in a Josper should be obligatory.

Chef Marc Gascons makes raw ingredients the star of a menu that revisits the hits of Catalan and Mediterranean gastronomy with his own touch, that unmistakable spark of great chefs. The style lies in the name: this is an informal place where you share your food, though the tapas and small dishes do have plenty of substance. The anchovies, from L'Escala, are fantastic, as is a shrimp carpaccio from Palamós that has become a favourite among diners.

Gascons is also one of the big names responsible for modern gastronomy including an update with the grill. With the unmistakable master touch with smoking and an expert hand with Basque, Argentine and Japanese grills, Gascons produces dishes that are the Platonic paradigm of flavour: grilled wild mushrooms with herb pesto, figs, pine nuts and Parmesan, for example.

We are open every day from 9 AM – 11:30 PM

Located in the emblematic district of Barceloneta with more than 60 years of history that are perceived in the original appearance of the premises. It is a classic of the neighborhood and has nothing to do with the rest of local tourist attractions in the area. Since 1955, Jai-ca has always been a family business that welcomes neighborhood residents daily, customers from all corners of the city and tourists from all over the world who seek to enjoy those tapas that have become tradition.

The place, with a modernist air, conserves the original bar, made of wood and with a rounded curve that gives character to the room. The tables are an authentic jewel, made of cane and tile with a white mosaic as an homage, it became the logo of the Jai-ca.

Jai-ca 2

A few years ago we opened a new bar with the same name (Jai-ca 2), located in the same street Ginebra but at number 9, just on the other corner of the original Jaica. The new location is bigger and allows us to offer service to more people, but keeping the same style and quality of the first Jai-ca.

Whether you are looking for classic or traditional tapas, or if you want to make vermouth, and extend your meal, you will find in the Jaica a great option to enjoy your friends and family.

Jaica products

All our products are fresh and of high quality, the fish arrives directly from the boat to the plate. The vermouth of the house is a must. Serve it in a tube glass with an ice cube, two fingers of gin, bitter, siphon, half a slice of orange and a couple of olives. You can’t miss it!!

It's the first restaurant in Barcelona to boast three Michelin stars. The surprising aesthetic never surpasses the combination of amazing flavours.

The young chef Jordi Esteve’s style is based on quality and creativity, and underpinned with tradition. How about some scallops with truffle and fish foam? And save room for dessert, as Esteve's coconut-infused creations, which he came up with when looking for a dish that 'gives the feeling of sitting near a wood fire to stave off a winter's chill'. In more good news for everyone, there's also a menu for coeliacs. The reward for all his hard work is a shiny Michelin star.

Restaurante Nectari has fast become a place of pilgrimage for lovers of haute cuisine with a Mediterranean flavour.  Since 2012, the restaurant has maintained its Michelin star which Jordi and his team display with great pride.

Albert Adrià has managed to coherently reinvent a cuisine that started out as a happy accident. He created his own wonders like a smoked mackerel maki that has rolled Peruvian 'causa' standing in for the rice. Try the heavenly 'espardenyes' nigiris or give yourself over to their surprising tasting menu.

Pakta earned a Michelin star in 2014, which signified Spain's entry into the gastronomic Olympus of a cuisine that, over the previous 25 years, had gone from misery to opulence; as the Peruvian writer Santiago Roncagliolo has said, the cuisine of his childhood had tasted good but looked terrible, as it was made to mask scarcity. That star also meant that the Spanish avant-garde of cooking looks to the south, not to the north. Albert Adrià has made the double pirouette of consistently reinventing a cuisine that is already an accident in itself. He created, without any rules or standards, wonders like a smoked mackerel maki where rolled Peruvian 'causa' stands in for the rice (unfortunately, that item is no longer on the menu).

The Winter Garden restaurant at the El Palace hotel lives up to any expectations you might have when you enter one of the great hotels in Barcelona, which, in this case, was founded in 1919 and has in the last few decades been a key spot in the luxury and modern side of the city.

The exclusivity is in the views as well as in the kitchen. The restaurant boasts spectacular 360-degree views of Barcelona, and  you get to choose between two tasting menus (between November and April only) with an air of French haute cuisine that are perfect for trying a bit of everything along with wine pairings. You're served the best possible seasonal products made into recipes that are sophisticated, serious and classic. You might get, for example, an artichoke salad with foie and figs, or a suckling pig with sweet potato, orange and licorice mash.

In the warmer months (April to October), the Jardín Diana garden is transformed into an urban oasis. The hotel's top floor offers guests and visitors signature tapas and Mediterranean cuisine à la carte, a selection of cocktails and good music with DJ sessions. It's an idyllic space away from the noise of the city streets, with one of the best panoramic views in town.

Xavier Pellicer closed his restaurant Celerí, which featured a mostly plant-based menu with animal protein options, just after earning a Michelin star for it. He reopened a little while later in a new location under his own name, and was immediately awarded the title of the Best Vegetable Restaurant in the World in 2018 by the 'We're Smart Green Guide' in its 'Think Vegetables' contest. The change is more of the same, but better. Pellicer has more space, an oak grill and a wok fire.
